Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, a Nations Online country profile of the small remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean in eastern Southern Africa.

Mauritius was discovered by the Arabs, followed by tribes of Malays, and some hundred years later, by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The island was more or less successfully occupied by the Dutch, French, and British before gaining independence in 1968. Since then, Mauritius has evolved from a low-income, agricultural economy to a diversified middle-income economy with a growing industrial, financial, and tourism sector.

Eligibility Criteria for study in Mauritius

  • 1) Applicants must have completed not less than 12 years of education at both primary and secondary education levels
  • 2) Applicants must have a high school diploma (translated in English) or an international baccalaureate
  • 3) Test of English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS score results.
  • 4) A bachelor’s degree certificate or diploma equivalent certified by the appropriate bodies for applicants into post-graduate programs.

What after Study?

After the successful completion of their bachelor’s degree, students may choose a variety of master’s courses that Mauritius provides based on their subject of interest and dream career ahead. These include agriculture, applied sciences, arts, business management, IT, education, engineering, environmental sciences, hospitality, humanities, journalism, law, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences. While the degree may take upto 1-1.5 years to complete depending on the course, students are often taught through seminars, exercises, practical workshops, field trips and research. These help them to not only prepare for a professional career but also an academic career if they choose to later in life. 

The Mauritius Student Visa allows international students to work for a total of 20 hours per week. They may find a variety in opportunities in the service sector which include restaurants, cafes, hotels, companies and the university itself. While English is spoken in the country, students are advised to be also acquainted with the Mauritian Creole to better communicate in the country. 

After successfully graduating from their studies, students are given an additional six months of stay in the country to find an employment opportunity. Once they do, they can transition their student visa to a Young Professionals Occupation permit that would allow them to live and work in Mauritius for upto 3 years. After the stipulated three years, they can transition into the normal residency permit and then onto the process of naturalization. 

Mauritius has a Post-Study Work visa. It is called the Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP). This visa is for international students who have completed at least an undergraduate degree in Mauritius.

There are conditions for this work permit.

You must have a contract with a Mauritian company. Your employer of record must be in one of the following areas:

  • 1) Artificial Intelligence
  • 2) Biotechnology
  • 3) Fintech
  • 4) Robotics
  • 5) Financial Services
  • 6) Information Technology

You must also apply for the work permit with six months of completing your study in Mauritius.

The visa is valid for three years. It is not renewable, but after three years, your employer can apply for a Professional Occupation Permit on your behalf.
