Why Study in Australia?

There are 37 government funded universities located in Australia, and 2 private universities. You will also find a number of other specialist higher education institutions. There are 26 Australian institutions in the 2022 QS World University Rankings top 500, 7 of which are in the top 100. The next highest ranked are the University of Melbourne, which is placed at 37th, and the University of Sydney, which is placed at 38th.

Eligibility Criteria for study in Australia

Australia has increasingly become another popular destination for international students to pursue higher studies. Here, we will talk about the study in Australia requirements for various courses, be it undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

Let us begin by understanding the study in Australia requirements for UG programs:

As is common knowledge, requirements basically indicate the eligibility factors that students have to meet to be accepted by Australian universities. It should be noted that if an aspiring student fails to meet the requirements, then the applications made by them will not only be rejected but they will also not be refunded the monetary expenses incurred during the application process. Hence, understanding the eligibility factor is of utmost importance. Below are the various factors to consider:

1) First, the applying candidate should ensure that they have completed the 10+2 level of education from a recognized education board, and have completed 17 years of age.
2) Most universities have a minimum score cut-off that a candidate must meet to be considered for admission. This is also the case for Australian universities. Here, the minimum cut-off score is 60% from a recognized board of education.
3) Additionally, an aspiring student must have under his belt proper letters of recommendation along with a solid Statement of Purpose (SOP), also known as a personal essay.
4) In addition to the above educational requirements, aspirants must take certain standardized tests to prove their proficiency in the English language. One can take the GMAT, or TOEFL, or IELTS for this purpose.
5) Other added requirements may include past work experience.

Let us now move on to the eligibility requirements for PG programs:

1) The primary requirement that a PG aspirant must fulfil is to have completed a course in graduate studies for a minimum of 3 years from a recognized board of education.
2) Similar to UG requirements, candidates must take a standardized test to prove their mastery of the English language. For PG programs, some Australian universities prefer tests like GMAT and GRE.
3) Finally, to complete their eligibility requirements and proceed with their admission application, the aspiring candidate must submit the letters of recommendation along with their previous scorecards from their 10th, 12th, and graduate courses.

What after Study?

If you don’t intend on completing further studies, you may wish to extend your time in Australia to work or travel. While you will no longer receive a student visa, there are a range of other temporary visa options that you can apply for through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. You may wish to extend your stay for the following reasons:

1) Travel: Many students decide to take a break when they finish their studies before they return home or start looking for a full-time job. Australia is a large, beautiful and diverse country — if you want to spend some time exploring the country, a Tourist Visa is a good option that will let you stay in the country for a period of up to three, six or 12 months. If you wish to work in order to fund your travels, you will need to apply for a Working Holiday Visa (see below).
2) Attend your graduation ceremony: Those wishing to stay in Australia to attend their Australian graduation ceremony are also able to apply for a Tourist Visa from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to extend their stay. Many Australian institutions also hold graduation ceremonies overseas, which may allow you to return home after completing your studies and attend a graduation ceremony closer to home.
3) Take a working holiday: People aged between 18 and 30 from approved countries are able to apply for a Working Holiday Visa or a Work and Holiday Visa from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, both of which allow you to work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months.
4) Continue working for your current employer: If you wish to stay working with your current employer and they are willing to sponsor you either temporarily or permanently through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s Employer Nomination Scheme, you are able to live and work in Australia for as long as you work for that employer.
5) Gain professional work experience: Engineering, accounting and computer science graduates are able to complete a Professional Year Program, which is a structured 12-month program designed to help them develop industry-specific skills through study and work experience.

Process

1) Admission to diploma level courses requires applicants to have scored 60% marks in class XII examination.
2) For bachelor’s degree admission, students must have scored at least 65% and above marks in class XII.
3) Whereas, students applying for masters admission in Australian Universities, applicants must have:
- > Almost all Australian Universities accept the 3-year graduation system for entry into most postgraduate courses. For instance, an Indian bachelor’s degree like B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. (ordinary) is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree with a total education of 12 years.
- > However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to Australian Bachelor (Honours) Degree, which requires either a honors graduation degree like B.A. (H), B. Com (H), etc or 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year after graduation or a four-year degree course like B.E., B. Tech and other such courses.
- > For most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

4)Secondary and higher secondary report or certificate along with the transcripts (mark sheets or report cards) of the final exams. It is ideal to convert the marks obtained in accordance with Australia’s grading system.
IELTS and GMAT exam scorecard (in case the student is applying for an MBA course) must be provided. The minimum scores in IELTS and GMAT exam may vary from education provider to provider. Refer to the particular university website to see the eligibility requirements for the course.
5) If you are applying for an MBA degree or a degree in higher education like doctoral programs; you may be required to provide work experience certificates or letters, mentioning the complete work details: key responsibilities and positions held. A detailed CV is also mandatory.
6) A statement of purpose or personal essay mentioning career goals, interests, extracurricular activities, and why the student has chosen the particular stream and how he/she will manage financially during the stay in Australia needs to be provided.
7) Letter of recommendation (two recommended) from the person who has taught the student or knows him/her professionally, highlighting the strengths weaknesses of the student and why he/she would excel in the chosen field, also needs to be provided.
